Is my child's effort level enough?

"We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort." Jesse Owens

Effort plays an important role in accomplishing tasks--regardless of a student's intelligence.

We may hear parents say, "Oh, he just lacks effort" when the child is unable to focus or comprehend. While a young child can eventually develop the capacity for willpower as he/she matures, effort and motivation are also influenced by cognitive ability. If the brain doesn't have strong attention or memory skills, it will be hard for young students to focus, listen to and remember instructions. This is why understanding a child's cognitive skills provides key insight into how he/she thinks and learns.

When you see a student exhibit low self-esteem, less engagement and poor performance compared to peers, it is important to find the root cause and start resolving this the earliest possible time. Possible root causes could be unclear academic instructions, lack of healthy structure or study habits, lack of communication or connection, or being in a learning system that is not suited for the student. At times, the root blocks could be physical, socio-emotional, developmental or cognitive in nature. (With the last being our arena, we definitely see that having weak cognitive ability always results to inefficiencies in the way information is absorbed, processed and retained.)

Because not all learning concerns can be outgrown, it is important for parents to look into these and investigate. Talk to your child's teacher and co-parents, research and learn more. Consult a developmental pediatrician, psychologist or interventionist for insights. Just keep going!

A Doctor's Experience

Speaking of effort, we recently invited award-winning bodybuilder and radiation oncologist Dr. Mike Malabanan to share his views and experience in being a dad, and how the BrainRx program helped a daughter in her academics and self-confidence.

The interview was a candid and lovely expression of a dad's love and commitment to raising his children!  Don't miss it--watch here.

School's back, get on track.

Start the school year strong by strengthening the ability to focus, absorb, process, and retain information. Our programs are ideal for students in crucial stages of their learning:

  • Preschoolers getting ready for big school

  • Middle-schoolers preparing for the rigors of high school

  • High-schoolers heading to university / college

  • Pre-professional students preparing for licensure examinations

  • Students  needing continuous learning support

  • Students aiming  for productivity and independence
